fred in his barber shop – ssembabule town, uganda

fred in his barber shop – ssembabule town, uganda

a container-car barber shop in ssembabule town. saw it when i was in the neighborhood and dropped by later with my camera. talked to fred a bit and took some photos.
STOKED at how it turned out.
what more is there to say?

best gas station ever – koboko district, west nile region uganda

best gas station ever – koboko district, west nile region uganda

i have always had this thing for shipping containers. can’t get enough. needless to say, season 2 of the wire was right up my alley.
there is a lot of good shipping container architecture here in uganda, but so far i think this is the best. i’ve always liked gas stations, too, so really i’m batting [...]

ochen

ochen

i just got my pocketwizards. this was my first real attempt at some off-camera light.
most of the soft light is provided by the open garage door at camera right. i hung a flash from the ceiling to add some rim lighting to his head.
at the time, newspapers seemed like an interesting idea for a backdrop. [...]

ethiopia 2008 slide show (happy new year!)

ethiopia 2008 slide show (happy new year!)

quick like bunnies, here is a slide show with some of my favorite shots from our week in ethiopia.
let me know what you think. got any faves?
we really enjoyed our trip…pleasant surprises all around. will definitely want to go back if the opportunity presents itself. especially after next year’s publication of the stevenson/fanshawe horn of [...]

lalibela pilgrim – ethiopia

lalibela pilgrim – ethiopia

maybe people are more friendly, maybe more curious of white people with cameras, maybe i was just in tourist mode…but for whatever reason i ended up taking a bunch of portraits this trip.
this guy was so stoked at seeing his photo in the LCD screen on the back. it was great to see the reaction.
ethiopian [...]

merry christmas from phil and odin!

merry christmas from phil and odin!

part of being a dad for me is figuring out all the cool things that odin can do ahead of schedule.
that said, i’m not sure where balancing on hands fits in but i thought it was pretty sweet for a four-month, 23 day-old kiddo.

lalibela priest – ethiopia

lalibela priest – ethiopia

this is a testament to good light. photo is straight from the camera, no nothing done to it.
i had seen some photos of lalibela on flickr etc. when i was travel planning our ethiopia trip and figuring out what to do with our week. there was a photo of this same priest that i loved [...]

phil’s birthday present

phil’s birthday present

ok, how sick is this? the think tank photo airport international v2.0 is my first real photo bag. as you can see, it holds a lot of stuff. and totally customizable. we have here 2x dslr bodies, 3x hard drives, my leica 35mm film camera, 2x extra batteries, battery charger, assorted cables, 70-200mm lens, 16-35mm [...]

peace and love, brother! from the family a.b.

peace and love, brother! from the family a.b.

surprised that it has been two weeks since the last photo. time goes right by when there’s a newborn in the house.
the dock and evening light are again the setting. tough to go wrong there. fill flash and low backlit sun.

studio portraits of paige at 39 weeks

studio portraits of paige at 39 weeks

paige has been asking for real pregnant pictures for like a month+ and it was starting to get way more urgent than just a standard honey-do list item. i felt like i’d gotten some really good photos of her, but she (reasonably so) wanted to do a real shoot so she could do her hair, [...]

tilt-shift perspective on the twins vs tigers

tilt-shift perspective on the twins vs tigers

this is what claytron is referring to in the comments, check out the link to a great little audio slide show by vincent laforet for the new york times online.
mr. laforet’s photos are pretty sick. i remembered the kentucky derby and football shots but had forgotten about the baseball images. nice to see he had [...]

national open boxing tournament – kampala

national open boxing tournament – kampala

the finals of the national open tournament were tonight at lugogo and a good crowd was on hand. i’ve whined enough about my lack of flash knowledge, so i’ll keep that to a minimum. but the top photo is a good teaching point about first- and second-curtain shutter sync.
for longer exposures you can set the [...]

tricycle start – kampala international marathon

tricycle start – kampala international marathon

this is the three-wheel hand-crank wheelchair class. i’ve never talked to wheelchair users here to see if there is a preference between these or the standard two-wheel variety. i imagine that those lucky enough to get a wheelchair aren’t too choosy.
the gear ratio on these is pretty low, probably so they can get up hills, [...]

wheelchair start – kampala intl marathon

wheelchair start – kampala intl marathon

the standard wheelchair start. these things were traveling so fast and looked so sketchy, though i’m sure the operators were in control.
1941 has put on his socks and trainers for the race and has his flip-flops stashed. it must be a big deal for these guys to be able to compete and i can imagine [...]

post-race first aid tent

post-race first aid tent

i had to get a photo of this guy, who came in to the tent, stripped down to his briefs and proceeded to get a full-body spray treatment and balm rub down.
the tent was full of cots and mattresses, and even fuller of the smell of ben-gay or tiger balm or whatever they used. and [...]

10km finisher – kampala international marathon

10km finisher – kampala international marathon

back-lit africans are not easy to expose correctly. i had to up the exposure compensation plenty in processing to be able to see the detail in his face. after spending the day looking at so much yellow, i toned down the saturation in this image and i like the way it turned out.
this wasn’t even [...]

michael – kampala international marathon

michael – kampala international marathon

michael is one of the ultimate players we know. i hadn’t seen him in some months. smiles are rare from ugandans when you’re taking their photo, so this was a coup. the edge of the first aid tent was a good spot for photos, with it’s indirect light and darker backgrounds.
in crowds, we know better [...]
